50% tint lets 50% of visible light through the window. A visible shade, but people and seats inside stay easy to see in daylight. On a passenger car's front side windows, 50% meets the written limit in 36 of the 44 states and DC we list; on the rear side windows in 43.

Too dark for the front side windows in: Alaska, California, District of Columbia, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont.

Passenger-car limits as written, read on each state's own law or DMV page (checked November 2026). Many laws measure glass and film together, so a 50% film on factory-tinted glass can read darker than 50%. SUVs and vans often have their own rear-window rules. This is a summary, not legal advice.
