Every level, what it looks like

VLT is the share of light the glass lets through, so the lower the number, the darker the window. These are the five levels the configurator offers.

Is it legal where you live?

The front side windows have the strictest rule. We list the limits for 44 states and DC, each read on the state's own law or DMV page.

Questions, answered

What does the tint percentage mean?

It is the VLT, visible light transmission: the share of light the window lets through. 70% lets most light in and looks light; 5% lets very little in and looks close to black. A lower number is a darker tint.

What tint percentage should I get?

Start with your state's limit for the front side windows: it is the strictest one for passenger cars. In 26 of the 45 places we list, the rear side windows may be darker than the front. Then pick the look you like here at or above that limit.

Is 5% (limo) tint legal?

On the front side windows of a passenger car, 5% meets the written limit in 0 of the 45 places we list. On the rear side windows it does in 15, sometimes only with mirrors on both sides. Check your state's page before you buy.

Does the tint go on the windshield here?

No. The pictures and the configurator tint the side and rear windows only and leave the windshield untouched. Every state we list restricts the windshield at least as much as the side windows, usually to a strip along the top.

How accurate are the pictures?

They are studio renders of each car. The tint is computed from a mask of the car's side and rear glass, the same way the configurator does it, so the darkness steps are consistent from car to car. Real film also changes with the light, the interior colour and the factory glass, so treat it as a guide.

Can I see tint on my own car?

Yes. Open the configurator, pick your make, model and year, and press Tint. Every level shown here is there, and you can combine it with a wrap colour and new wheels.
