How the calculator works

  1. Start from the car's size. Overall length, width (without mirrors) and height from the maker's published specs.
  2. Turn the size into film. The sides, top and ends of that box are each scaled by how much of them is paint rather than glass, wheel arches or grille. Then 12% goes on for bleed, handling and overlap between panels. A body-type factor corrects for shape: a pickup's open bed is not film. The factors are calibrated against published per-car figures from template makers, film suppliers and installers.
  3. Adjust for the job. Special films (metallic, pearl, color-shift, brushed, carbon) add 10%, because pieces can't be turned to nest on the roll. Chrome adds 30%. Door jambs add 15%. A hood is one piece about 5 ft deep across the car's width.
  4. Give a range, order the top. The figure is shown as ±10%, which covers the biggest miss we found against published figures (7–8%). The order is the top of that range on a 60-inch (5 ft, 1.52 m) roll, so all the film can come from one batch.
  5. First wrap? Add 15 ft of spare film for re-dos.

Film area here is gross film: the rectangles you cut from the roll, waste included. That is the figure suppliers quote. The painted surface itself is about a third smaller.

Vinyl questions, answered

How much vinyl do I need to wrap a car?

For a full wrap in gloss, satin or matte: about 61 ft of 60-inch roll for a small hatchback, 69 ft for a mid-size sedan and 90 ft for a large SUV. Those are order lengths, the top of a ±10% range. Across our 310 cars the order runs from 51 to 98 ft.

How many rolls of vinyl does a car take?

A standard roll is 60 inches wide and 75 ft (25 yd) long. Most cars fit on one roll. Every large SUV in our catalog needs two. Any car whose order goes over 75 ft needs a second roll; the table above shows which sizes get there.

Why order more than the estimate?

All the film on one car should come from the same production batch, because color can shift slightly between batches. Running short halfway through is the expensive mistake, so the calculator orders the top of the ±10% range.

Do chrome and color-shift films need more vinyl?

Yes. Metallic, pearl, color-shift, brushed and carbon films have a direction, so pieces can't be rotated to fit the roll: add about 10%. Chrome wastes 30% or more. On a mid-size sedan that takes the order from 69 ft to 89 ft in chrome.

How much vinyl for a hood, roof or mirrors?

A hood is cut as one piece about 5 ft deep and as long as the car is wide: about 31 sq ft on a mid-size sedan, 7 ft of roll. A pair of mirror caps takes a piece about 2 × 5 ft (10 sq ft), more on trucks and vans. We don't give a roof figure: roof length varies too much between cars to estimate from overall size.

Do door jambs need extra film?

Yes, about 15% more on a four-door car, roughly 5 to 8 sq ft per opening.

I've never wrapped a car. How much spare should I buy?

Add about 15 ft for mistakes and re-dos. Tick "My first wrap" and the calculator adds it.

How accurate is this?

It is a planning estimate, usually within 10% of published per-car guides. Installers cut differently, so check with yours before you buy film.
